The SIMAD iLab Professional Certifications Program is a flagship skills development initiative designed to bridge the gap between academic education and the practical, market-driven competencies required in today’s workforce. Implemented by SIMAD iLab, the program responds to the growing demand for structured, high-quality, and job-ready training opportunities for Somali youth, particularly in fields shaped by rapid digital transformation. The Professional Certifications Program is designed as a continuous series, implemented twice each year, allowing SIMAD iLab to regularly respond to evolving market needs and expand access to professional skills development. Through an applied learning model and professional certification pathways, the program equips participants with the skills, confidence, and mindset needed to succeed in employment, freelancing, and entrepreneurship.
The program delivered structured professional certifications across five high-demand and future-oriented fields: Digital Marketing, Administrative Secretary Skills, Graphic Design, Video Production, and Data Analytics. Each certification track was carefully designed to balance theoretical understanding with hands-on application, ensuring learners gained both conceptual clarity and practical experience. Course content was aligned with real labor market needs and global professional standards, while mentorship, project-based learning, and portfolio development were embedded throughout the program to ensure graduates were workplace-ready upon completion.
The SIMAD iLab Professional Certifications Program generated strong interest from across Somalia, reflecting the growing demand for accessible, high-quality professional training. In total, the program received over 620 applications across the five certification tracks. Following a rigorous and transparent selection process, more than 280 participants were accepted into the program, with over 180 learners successfully graduating. The cohorts were diverse and gender-balanced, bringing together recent graduates, working professionals, freelancers, and aspiring entrepreneurs, creating a rich learning environment built on peer exchange and collaboration.
Training was delivered using a competency-based and learner-centered approach that emphasized applied, project-driven learning rather than purely theoretical instruction. Participants worked on real-world assignments and capstone projects that resulted in tangible outputs such as websites, digital marketing campaigns, design portfolios, short films, data dashboards, and professional reports. Continuous mentorship from experienced trainers and industry practitioners supported participants throughout their learning journey, while peer collaboration and feedback further strengthened skill development and professional confidence.
Beyond technical skill acquisition, the program demonstrated meaningful economic impact by enabling participants to convert learning into income-generating opportunities. Many learners began freelancing, securing part-time work, or launching small business initiatives during and after the training period. Collectively, participants generated over USD 40,000 in verified income, reflecting earnings from freelance platforms, direct client work, and employment opportunities. These outcomes highlight the program’s effectiveness in improving employability and supporting sustainable livelihoods.
The SIMAD iLab Professional Certifications Program has positioned SIMAD iLab as a leader in competency-based professional training and youth employability initiatives in Somalia. By combining practical skills development, mentorship, and career readiness, the program contributes directly to workforce development, entrepreneurship, and digital innovation. Building on the achievements of Cohort One, SIMAD iLab remains committed to strengthening program delivery, expanding partnerships, and scaling access to professional certifications that empower Somali youth to compete confidently in both local and global markets.
