Background

The International Trade Centre (ITC), the joint agency of the World Trade Organization and the United Nations, and IITE Institute have joined forces to launch the Digital Skills for Jobs project in Mogadishu, funded by the Government of Japan. The project aims to establish freelancing as a viable job creation alternative in Somalia.

The project is launched with a focus on harnessing market-based incentives to help foster livelihoods in the online freelancing sector for the Somali youth. Project activities will allow the youth to gain commercially valuable skills while also supporting value creation and employment in Somalia. The project seeks to demonstrate the feasibility and modalities for linking the youth to opportunities in regional and international markets.

After identifying and selecting graduates of these programs, the project will work with the students to train them in online freelancing and entrepreneurship and to connect them to online work platforms such as UpWork to find jobs. Areas of work will include graphic design, mobile app development, digital marketing, and web development. The program will also include a comprehensive mentorship program on both soft and professional skills.

Qualifications requirement:

An application shall include the following to be considered:

1. Must be aged between 20 to 35 years old.
2. Education level – Minimum of secondary completion certificate or College equivalent.
3. Applicants with a degree are preferred.
4. Must be an ICT and Computer literate
5. Learning aptitude – High comprehension levels and logical thinking
6. English proficiency – Excellent written and spoken English
7. Digital readiness – Demonstrates excellent web research skills and advanced computer applications
8. Commitment to attend full duration of the training – 6 months, 5 days a week, 5 hours per day
9. 100% attendance
10. Must have own laptop or is able to borrow one for the duration of the 6-month course.
11. Must have valid Government-issued ID or Passport to verify Upwork account.
12. Must have Bank account with Swift code.
