A Crash Workshop Guide to Learn MLPY-4E in less than 1 Week

Mogadishu FabLab, part of SIMAD iLab, is hosting the first course in 2023. This three-day course will teach Python, a programming language with "batteries included" that emphasizes code readability. Learners will develop the practical skills required to begin machine programming, debugging, and utilizing Python in everyday activities.

Workshop Objectives

‍We'll cover the core ML Python language and the standard library in detail. This workshop will cover various skills, including text manipulation, modular programming, working with and retrieving data, interacting with files on your computer, and using some of the more popular third-party libraries (and getting them installed when and where we need them). The goal is to get participants up and running with Python in as short a time as possible.

Intended participants‍

Practitioners who wish to learn how to execute machine learning with Python.

Knowledge Level

Prior experience programming in any language (for machine learning or otherwise) and fundamental knowledge of machine learning concepts. This workshop can serve as your first experience executing machine learning hands-on – or, if you already have such experience with a language or platform other than Python, this workshop will serve to facilitate your “lateral move” to Python.

Diverse application areas‍

This workshop’s hands-on exercises cover various applications of predictive modeling that mitigate harm and save money, including gambling, hospital readmissions, nefarious actor detection, time to failure, and hotel bookings.

Bring your laptop with Python pre-installed

Workshop participants are required to bring their own laptops for use during this hands-on workshop with Python version ≥3.x installed. By using python libraries, we focus on working with paths, dictionaries, files, CSV and JSON files, opening the browser, sending emails and Databases.

Pre-install instructions

The easiest way to have both a compatible version of Python, as well as all these required libraries on your laptop is to install Python version ≥3.x. Please be sure to do it before the workshop day.
